Hey thanks for checking in and welcome to my blog. First most, my name is Jacob R. Cruz and I’m proud to have been born and raise here in Sacramento, CA. To summarize myself, in the movie Selana her dad had iconically said “being Mexican-American is hard … we gotta prove to the Mexicans how Mexican we are and we gotta prove to the Americans how American we are, we gotta be more Mexican than the Mexicans and more American than the Americans, all at the same time, it’s exhausting”. I used to have that way of thinking of belonging to a group, belonging to a people or certain race but as I got older I just had enough and said fuck it all of just danced to the beat of my own drum, to be who I want to be and not have to do everything so stereotypical or expected. Even my parents come from two different backgrounds, my mother is a second generation she was born in Fresno, CA but my father came to California when he was a young boy from Baja California, Mexico so I guess that makes me Chicano I think, right? But I’m not your average Mexican-American because here’s a shocker I can’t speak Spanish like at all to save my life beside obvious ones like hola and a few curse words but who doesn’t. I’m not all into Mexican/Latin music like mariachi, cumbia, bachata, or merengue except for Selena, anything for Selanas ๐. When it comes to music I got rock n’ roll in my bones, my heart beats with guitars, bass, and drums all in synch (no not the boy band no pun intended). My favorite artist is Johnny Cash and my favorite band is Metallica ๐ค, not what you might expect from a “Chicano” not sure if I am or not. Oh and Mexican candy oh don’t even get me started, yuck!!!, no thanks I’ll take a snickers bar thank you very much. Hell my favorite sport is basketball (Go Kings)๐ instead of soccer, i rather pick up and dribble a ball than kick it. I’m a current college student at Sacramento City College and I’m also a returning student. Returning? Why what happen you might be wondering. Let’s see I graduated high school in 2012 (the same year I was very lucky and fortunate to go a school trip to France and Spain) when the world was supposedly going to end even though the Mayans disagreed with that, I enrolled at Sac City the Fall semester of 2012 but one year and semester I left and I joined the military (19 years old). I had served 4 years as a rifleman in the United States Marine Corps with Second Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, Fox Company. I was lucky because I was stationed in Hawaii on the island of Oahu (Highly recommend eating at steak rave and then head to Kailua beach, my favorite beach especially and a clear sunny day, there is nothing quite like it) and deployed twice to Okinawa, Japan, South Korea and the Philippines once. I had made so many great friends for a lifetime along with with great and not so great memories. But transitioning back into the civilian world hasn’t been a smooth ride the two biggest struggles I faced coming back are loneliness and finding a purpose. But one of the things that makes the days go by better is returning to school now that I’m older (I’m 25 not that old) and more mature than I was my first year at Sac City when I was 18. So that’s me but that’s just a small sample about myself but that’s for another time. Good thing about blogs is that there’s always more to write but until then I see you later.
